Who knows what lurks in the darkness? Who hears the shrieks of the fallen demons piercing the night like swords? Who feels the pain of every fallen Angel who is thrown to earth in the sound of their cries? Two names can answer all these questions. Aiden Kern or Azraielle Kayowne The bar was dingy, at best, run down, made out of a ramshackle building, the walls of which were stained black with soot from the fire that had nearly consumed it a few years before. The people who came here were looking simply for jobs to take, being bounty hunters, waiting for tidbits, and going over the wanted posters tacked on the crumbling bulletin board. The broken clock on the wall said it was ten thirty at night, which meant, to the constant customers, that it was really midnight. Twenty pairs of eyes flashed continually toward the door to the bar. Any minute it would open and he would arrive, as he did every night around 12 A.M. The doorknob turned, twenty pairs of eyes remained focused on the door, it swung open with a squeak of rusty hinges that hummed in the air, and he stepped inside, the huge Cheshire cat grin plastered on his pale, childish face. His dark red eyes glowing in the half light from the oil lamps hanging from the rafters above the bar, he glanced around, his eyes flashing from face to face as he sought out a partner for the night, he hadn’t even glanced at the newest wanted posters, and he already knew which job he wanted. He ran a pale, long fingered hand through his dark silver hair, and stepped forward, his sleek, black leather boots were silent as he tromped across the bar, he held his hand out as he passed the counter, and snagged a glass of milk that was already awaiting his fingers from it, taking a small sip, and licking his lips. He glanced around again, his eyes glowing ever brighter, and people began to talk nervously to each other, staring anywhere but at the man. “Aiden, welcome back,” The bartender, a scrawny pale man, with overlarge blue eyes and yellow teeth, nodded his head to the man, who slipped his arms out of his white trench coat and handed it to the man over the bar. “How’ve you been, Thomas?” Aiden asked in response, flipping the tails of his red undercoat out so he could slide onto the only whole bar stool. He messed with one of the grey buttons across the front before looking back up at Thomas, who shrugged his shoulder, glancing at Aiden’s booted feet. “Important job, Aiden?” He asked, showing his yellowing teeth to the young man, Aiden followed Thomas’ gaze to his boots and laughed, “Yeah, got my boots on, don’t I?” His face split again into the Cheshire cat grin, “I’m going after Cornalli and his gang.” Thomas raised a thin black eyebrow at that, “Cornalli? Aiden, he’s dangerous.” It was Aiden’s turn to raise an eyebrow, a delicate silver eyebrow, which made him look strangely sinister, do to the fact that he was still grinning crazily. “Why do you think I want the job?” Aiden murmured, his face relaxing, the grin sliding away, “I need a partner,” At this remark the man spun around on his stool to face the now silent drinkers, “Anyone here up to it?”
